Action status and knowledge obtainment of ghost fishing, marine litter and recycling in the Nordic countries.

Clean Nordic Oceans works with an overview of national systems and measures regarding loss of fishing gear, reducing the risk of ghost fishing as well as recycling, within commercial and recreational fishing activities. The overview is part of the effort to facilitate sharing of knowledge that can be used across national borders in the Nordic region.

During the Clean Nordic Oceans workshop the 16 August, it became clear how different the Nordic countries was standing in terms of systems and measures regarding marine litter, ghost fishing and recycling. Although the countries may have a different need for both systems and measures, such a comprehensive overview could be a first step to identify opportunities to use already established systems and measures from "neighboring countries". Furthermore, be able to see the whole picture of the loss of gear, ghost fishing for recycling or other methods to handle endangered fishing gear. It will also provide an overview that would be a good basis for increasing communication and cooperation between the Nordic countries around this issue. By doing this, we hope to develop environmentally friendly and sustainable practices with common challenges.

Denmark, Sweden and Norway already have the overview in place, but we now wish that the rest of the countries contribute to complete the form for their country. Therefore, we encourage relevant and professional individuals from the given countries to fill out the form found as a link underneath.
